Total Knee Replacement

A total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure performed by an orthopaedic surgeon in which a prosthetic (artificial) joint made of metal and plastic replaces the arthritic joint surfaces.

Individuals requiring joint replacements usually do so because of arthritic changes (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis) that interfere with their quality of life. These may result in:

  • Pain
  • Decreased mobility
  • Restricted motion
  • Deformity
  • Limping

Most people are very satisfied with the results of a total knee replacement. The expected results include:

  • Pain relief
  • More mobility
  • Improved range of motion
  • Correction of deformity
  • Improved quality of life as people are able to resume activities that they enjoy but had to stop because of a “bad” knee
