What is diagnostic imaging? Imaging is the process by which physicians evaluate an area of the body that is not normally visible. Diagnostic imaging uses radiant energy, including x-rays, radium, cobalt and nuclear medicine applications, to diagnose and treat diseases.
The digital advantage Digital diagnostic equipment offers advantages to patients: faster tests that are more comfortable and less invasive, as well as faster access to test results.
The technology offers physicians and technologists greater speed and efficiency, because they no longer have to handle large packages of film, and they can zoom in on areas of the image or isolate portions of the image for greater visibility.
Because digital images can be e-mailed, they enable physicians to view their patient’s test results on a computer in their office or at home. This new approach to diagnostic services makes it easier for physicians to consult with each other or with a radiologist at Thompson, since digital images can be viewed simultaneously at different locations.
Patient care A nursing area in the diagnostic imaging department gives patients a quiet, private place to receive medical preparation for some procedures and to rest and recover from the effects of any anesthesia afterward. Our staff of nurses monitor patients’ condition, answer questions and provide post-procedure instructions when patients are ready to return home.
