Thompson also offers you access to the American College of Radiology awareness programs that allow you to monitor you and your family’s medical imaging history. We provide Image Wisely, for adults, and Image Gently, for pediatric patients, which are pocket-sized cards for individuals to track the diagnostic imaging exams they receive. Accredited by the American College of Radiology, Thompson’s Diagnostic Imaging Department performs over 12,000 CT scans each year. Its services also include interventional radiology, digital mammography, MRI, nuclear medicine, X-ray and ultrasound.
What is a CT Scan? CT scan, also called a CAT scan, obtains multiple cross-sectional images by using x-rays and computer enhancement. A CT scan creates an image that is much more sensitive than a regular x-ray. It works by x-raying the patient from many different angles and compiling the information in a computer. The computer makes an image that can be viewed on a screen or printed out as a photograph. The image produced looks like a "slice" of the body, usually the abdomen, chest or head. CT scans reveal both bone and soft tissues, including organs, muscles, and tumors. Image tones can be adjusted to highlight tissues of similar density, and, through graphics software, the data from multiple cross-sections can be assembled into 3-D images. Your physician will use these images to rule out or confirm the presence of certain abnormalities or diseases.
Our CT scanner at Thompson Health allows scans to be completed in less than one “breath hold” by the patient.
