Oftentimes, the term Athletic Trainer is confused with personal trainer, fitness trainer and other various health professionals. Athletic Trainers are specialists in preventing, recognizing, managing and rehabilitating injuries that result from physical activity. They must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and pass the National Athletic Trainers’ Association certification exam. In order to practice in New York State, an Athletic Trainer must be registered with the NYS Education Department.
Sports Medicine at Thompson Health provides contracted Athletic Training services for nearly all area high schools throughout the greater Ontario County area. While working in area high schools, Athletic Trainers are able to see athletes after an initial injury. The Athletic Trainers can then decide if it is necessary for the athlete to be further evaluated by a physician or if they would benefit from a home exercise program.
Athletic Trainers act as liaisons between the coaches, parents, athlete and physician in discussing the athlete’s status and what steps should be taken to get the athlete safely back to his or her sport.

Because Athletic Trainers are uniquely skilled in the evaluation and management of athletic injuries and conditions, they are vital members of the Sports Medicine team.
