CELEBRATING STORIES OF GENEROSITY The inspiring personal stories we share with you in this report are each incredibly unique. As you will find there are so many ways in which to support UR Medicines Thompson Health and so many reasons to do so. Whether its gratitude for the exceptional care given to a loved one a commitment to community or a desire to ensure access to the latest advancements in healthcare technology each story has a driving force spurring it on. And although they are indeed unique each story highlighted here has something in common No matter how the men and women featured in this report have shown their support for Thompson each of them can be secure in the knowledge that 100 percent of their gift will stay right here within our own health system. After all the 2012 affiliation with UR Medicine has resulted in many exciting developments for Thompson such as the addition of a number of specialties and yet it was crafted in such a way that Thompson maintains a great deal of autonomy and a great deal of responsibility for its own destiny. Just as it has since it was founded more than a century ago by a benefactress whose compassion and vision are legendary Thompson Health must still raise its own funds manage its own debt and support its own growth. This is why we rely - as much as ever - on the generosity of those who believe in the value of a hometown health system offering a personal touch and a genuine devotion to the well- being of those it serves. In this life each of us has unique talents ideas and gifts to give. We are honored that the families and individuals celebrated through the stories contained in these pages have chosen to share theirs with Thompson. Our sincere hope is that in the coming year and in years to come you will do so as well writing Thompson into the story of your life and celebrating the incredible things we can accomplish together. 2 CATALYST FOR HOPE different ways Laurie made a profound impact on our family and everyone who knew her including the medical community of the greater Rochester area and the Finger Lakes region. As an ardent patient advocate Dr. Sands would no doubt be proud of her familys generous support of a breast imaging center which promises to bring the highest level of care technology and service to everyone in the region. The Sands family and Constellation Brands have been a driving philanthropic force for many of Thompson Healths most ambitious initiatives and this spirit of charitable giving leads directly back to Marvin and Marilyn Sands and the children they raised. The Sands familys charitable legacy started with Marvin and when it came to community development his first commitment was always to Thompson where he served as president and chairman of the board for 30 years. Marvin really started the philanthropic aspect of what we do son Rob explained. His steadfast support of Thompson made a tremendous impact on me and my brother Richard. He shared his passion for Thompson with us and taught us how philanthropy impacts our community. Since Marvins passing in 1999 both Constellation Brands and the Sands family have continued the legacy of generosity by making lead gifts in 2002 to expand emergency diagnostic ambulatory and rehabilitation services and again in 2009 to build the Constellation Center for Health and Healing. With a matching gift of up to 375000 the new Breast Imaging Center is the latest beneficiary of their generosity. The center will be named for Dr. Laurie Sands and will provide patients with access to cutting-edge services like 3-D breast imaging to detect cancer early same-day test results to eliminate the emotional strain of waiting days for the outcome of a service and a Breast Health Patient Navigation Team to provide personalized managed care throughout treatment. The oldest child of Marvin and Marilyn Dr. Sands was a noted internist and mother of two wonderful children Abby and Zach. She died of ovarian cancer in 1995 at the age of 47. Laurie found her calling in medicine and became a very successful internist said her brother Richard who described his older sister as tiny brilliant and fiercely independent. In many F. F. Todd and Laura fell in love with the local landscape and the people within it and have been a part of the community now for the past 13 years. They juggle the demands of a growing business and growing children yet still find time to make their community a priority in their lives. After learning about the proposed Breast Imaging Center at an information session hosted by Mike Schwabl and Lauren Dixon the Cooks knew the 3D Digital Tomosynthesis technology would be vital to detecting cancers early. I feel a great sense of pride being part of something so Twenty years ago Todd and Laura Cook were focused on starting a new business in the basement of their Williamsville NY home. Their goal was to be independent business owners and take great pride in contributing jobs to the community. As their business grew they relocated to Victor where they found a pool of talented labor. They invested in a large design and manufacturing facility to support a comprehensive line of vibration sensors cabling and switch signal devices. revolutionary for our region said Laura. I look forward to showing my children how our family helped others have hope and access to high-quality health care. I want to teach them to care about the whole and those around us. By making our gift a matching gift challenge we wanted to encourage others to join us in supporting this wonderful cause. Being a catalyst for something that will touch so many lives makes me feel great 4 the leading community health system in the state. On a personal level its already the best Patty says. Two of our grandchildren were born with serious breathing difficulties and needed fast emergency transfers she said. Thompson and the doctors and nurses were all over it. They were exemplary. Great local health care is not a given. We cant take it for granted added Paul. Our Long Island son-in-law was amazed at the short time it took our grandson to be seen and cared for in Thompsons Emergency Department when he needed stitches. Those are the kinds of things we sometimes tend to take for granted. ONE FAMILY S GRATITUDE Paul and Patty Hudsons very special relationship with Thompson Health runs deep and has its roots in a bygone era when F.F. Thompson Hospital was on North Main Street in Canandaigua. Thats where two of their five daughters were born as was Paul. Sixteen grandchildren later the Hudsons are among Thompsons strongest supporters. Thompson has been there every step of the way for us from saving newborns to caring for our aging loved ones said Paul the retired CEO and owner of Roberts Communications Inc. one of upstate New Yorks oldest and largest advertisingmarketing agencies. In this life you need to support what you care about. You reward excellence and you invest in what you will inevitably need for yourself and your loved ones. The Hudsons have been Thompson donors since 1989 and have supported several capital campaigns including the new Breast Imaging Center. The Hudson Garden at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center was established by the family to honor Harry and Pearl Hudson Pauls grandparents. Paul who has served on Thompsons Board of Directors since 1999 and currently is the vice chairman appreciates the health systems past and looks forward to its future. Thompson was superb even before it aligned with UR Medicine he said. Now we are on the way to being unbeatable poised to become In this life you need to support what you care about. You reward excellence and you invest in what you will inevitably need for yourself and your loved ones. F. F. It offers a small- town personal approach to care and the level of expertise is superb. GIVING THANKS BY GIVING BACK Jane A. Wade believes the greatest gift she can give to the community that supported her and her family is to give back . The Wade family owned Wades Market Center in Farmington for more than four decades. John Wade Janes late husband was born and raised in Canandaigua and she is a native of the Manchester Shortsville area. Together they had two children Susan and Christopher and were later blessed with three grandchildren. As John and Janes family grew so did their store. Located at the corner of Route 96 and Mertensia Road Wades started out as a small mom and pop operation with only one checkout. Through the years it became a full-service grocery store offering a bank pharmacy and a host of convenient services to its customers. Although Wades was sold in 2013 Jane still has a strong desire to support the community that has been so good to her. By making a five-year pledge to Thompson Health to be used wherever the need is greatest Jane is honoring her husbands memory as well as benefitting the community she holds dear to her heart. For over 40 years our customers and employees were just like family to us explains Jane. Owning Wades gave us the opportunity to develop close relationships with the people who shopped there. We cared about them and our dedicated employees deeply. Jane feels Thompson shares her values adding They treat people like family not just a number. Thompson is convenient accessible and a treasure in our community. It offers a small-town personal approach to care and the level of expertise is superb. Asked what she would say to others who may be considering a donation to Thompson Jane emphatically replies Do it Supporting the community you live in and love is the greatest gift you can give. 6 GEORGE EASTMAN CIRCLE knowing the funds received by Thompson through the George Eastman Circle are unrestricted to be used however they are needed most. We are blessed to have a healthcare facility of this caliber in our community said Kelly an adjunct instructor at Finger Lakes Community College. Its legacy of high- quality services has been made possible by past donations of time and money by many and if we want to continue these services and keep pace with developing medical therapies and technologies it will require additional philanthropy well into the future. As the first to designate Thompson Health as a beneficiary of their gift to the George Eastman Circle Brian and Kelly Meath have a compelling and simple motivation their son is alive healthy and thriving. The timing of his arrival couldnt have been worse. It was 3 a.m. just as the epic ice storm of March 1991 began to wreak havoc throughout the region and he was 12 weeks premature. Thank goodness for the Meaths Thompson Hospital was only 2 miles away. They were great. They did everything they could to prevent delivery and once they got her stabilized the doctors at Thompson recommended Kelly go to Strong Memorial Hospital right away said Brian now the vice president associate general counsel for Constellation Brands. It was a harrowing transport performed heroically by the Canandaigua Emergency Squad. Fallen trees telephone lines electric lines and poles were blocking roads everywhere and all roads were closed except for emergency vehicles recalled Brian who followed the ambulance to Strong. The doctors and nurses at Strong were amazing added Kelly. They managed to prevent delivery for another four days. Kyle Meath spent the first seven weeks of his life in the neonatal intensive care unit at Golisano Childrens Hospital. Today hes a fine young man 24 years old lives in Canandaigua and serves on the Ontario ARC Board of Directors Kelly said. Were forever grateful to the doctors and nurses at Thompson Hospital and Golisano Childrens Hospital for the exceptional care during that difficult time. The Meaths have shown their appreciation over the years with philanthropy and civic involvement. A former member of the Thompson Foundation Board Brian currently serves as board secretary on the Thompson Health Board of Directors and is a member of the boards for Happiness HouseFinger Lakes Cerebral Palsy and the United Way of Ontario County. Kelly serves on the Wood Library Board of Directors. The Meaths are also members of the George Eastman Circle at the University of Rochester committing to a five-year gift allocated equally among Thompson Golisano and the Simon Business School. They view their gifts as sound investments and take heart in F. F. T H O M P S O N F O U N DAT I O N R E P O R T O N G I V I N G 2 014 77 them thanks to its affiliation with UR Medicine. Ive worked with some very fine institutions some of the best in world and the fact that Thompson Health is part of one of them puts it on a par with the top hospitals in the United States if not the world said Dr. Haggerty who became internationally known through his work in academe national and international organizations public policy forums and foundation management. The affiliation with UR Medicine is part of the strength of Thompson Health and it makes people confident that they are getting the best care possible. Dr. Haggerty and his wife Muriel were major Thompson donors for many years before Muriel passed away in May of 2014. Dr. Haggerty continues his generosity in memory of Muriel who was an obstetrics nurse and worked for the Visiting Nurse Association of Greater Rochester. We owe much to the Sands Cancer Center said Dr. Haggerty The level of care was exceptional and we were only minutes away from home. Instead of spending a full day up at Strong wed be done in an hour at Thompson. Time is a valuable commodity. Dr. Haggerty is similarly impressed with Thompsons senior living services. The continuum of care is designed to meet a seniors needs at every age and every stage he said. And having the full spectrum of care and the sequence-of-aging facilities right in our geographic area is an integration of services rarely seen at community hospitals. The continuum of care within UR Medicines Thompson Health is designed to meet a seniors needs at every age and every stage. RECOGNIZING EXCEPTIONAL CARE Robert J. Haggerty MD one of the nations top pediatricians before his retirement in 1992 has been affiliated with some of the finest medical facilities in the world Boston Childrens Hospital and its teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School St. Marys Hospital in London Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Now a resident at Thompson Healths independent living community of Ferris Hills at West Lake Dr. Haggerty ranks Thompson right up there with the best of 8 GENERATIONS OF GIVING Health was a natural choice because of the many services they provided her. Just as Thompson has a legacy of caring Nick and Helen Fudo left a legacy of giving. Indeed Sandy describes Thompson as one of the charities near and dear to us. Our family is grateful for the professional care and convenience of having Thompson in our community. John and Sandy Ford are grateful for the care Sandys mother Helen Fudo received from Thompson Health. Nick and Helen FudoAs residents of Canandaigua for many years Sandy and John Ford have been longtime supporters of Thompson Health contributing to several capital campaigns including the recent breast imaging center initiative. The couples already high regard for the health system grew however after Sandys mother Helen Fudo then 88 moved to the community in 2010. As Helen underwent a series of surgeries and experienced a serious bout with pneumonia Sandy and John witnessed Thompson professionals consistently treat Helen with such warmth and respect that they always felt confident she was in good hands. The personalized attention from the staff especially on the orthopaedic wing exemplified how close-knit a community Thompson is said John a former owner of CIG Insurance in Canandaigua. Nurses and aides remembered her from each stay and made her feel welcome. She always felt appreciated as a patient whether it was for a simple blood draw ER visit or inpatient stay. Sandy agreed noting the care was thankfully far better than the care her late father Nick Fudo received from large hospitals out west during his illness a few years earlier. Our experiences at Thompson were significantly more intimate and satisfactory she said. They took very good care of her. Prior to Helens passing she asked John and Sandy for advice on selecting beneficiaries for the charitable remainder trust she and Nick had established as part of their long-term financial planning. Dad was inclined to give smaller amounts to several different organizations. Mom thought it more effective to give more substantial gifts to two or three charities that touched our family personally and where the funds could be put to use locally Sandy said. Both schools of thought make sense but in the end Mom prevailed and Thompson F. F. This years cash call raised an incredible 12000 to purchase a much-needed infant warmer for The Birthing Center. Thompsons Director of Obstetrics Deborah Jones set the stage for the cash call with a dramatic description of how the new Panda Infant Warmer would help the most vulnerable newborns. The sellout crowd of more than 300 Thompson supporters listened intently as Deborah explained that about 10 percent of newborns require some assistance in making the transition after delivery. When these babies are born we become their life support she said asking those in the crowd to imagine being an OB nurse caring for a baby called Vivian born six weeks premature. Vivian does not breathe and requires manual ventilation. As you resuscitate you move her quickly into the nursery. You put her on the scale because we need an accurate weight to dose her antibiotics. This takes precious seconds and exposes her to the cold. Once she is on the warmer the doctor inserts a breathing tube and ventilation continues. The portable x-ray machine arrives and you have to lift Vivian off the mattress to put the x-ray cassette under her making sure you dont dislodge the breathing tube. The respiratory therapist has to rearrange the air and oxygen tubing to prevent the baby from receiving too much oxygen Deborah continued. Youre standing under the heating unit trying to start an IV in a hand the size of your thumb while sweat is dripping down your neck and the heater alarm is blaring because you cant silence it without stopping the procedure. Heres the same scenario with the Panda she said. Vivian comes to the nursery and is weighed right on the warmer which has a built-in scale. The therapist regulates the oxygen concentration with a simple turn of a dial. The x-ray cassette slides into a drawer under the mattress so you dont need to move Vivian for her chest x-ray. And the radiant heater directs warmth to the mattress not the top of your head. The heater alarm sounds and you swipe your hand in front of a sensor to temporarily silence it without interrupting your care. As soon as Deborah finished her story the cash calls rang out 100 200 500 Within a few short minutes 12000 had been raised and thats in addition to the 50000 the gala raised for the new Breast Imaging Center. The generosity shown by our supporters at the gala was simply astounding said Deborah. The new Panda is already paying dividends in The Birthing Center and I want our donors to know what a huge difference they have made in the lives of these at-risk newborns. Registered nurses like Deborah Jones left and Alexandra Coggi say a new Panda Infant Warmer helps the most vulnerable newborns. 10 ENHANCING THE WORK FORCE team members and modifies practice standards as a result of the experience. Chris Dailey Thompsons current director of Pharmacy recently utilized the Education Fund to attend a conference on infectious disease pharmacotherapy learning new ways to monitor antibiotic usage and maximize safety. Its important that associates have access to advanced training and by providing education funding the Guild helps keep Thompsons workforce among the best and the brightest Without the Guilds support I wouldnt have been able to attend this great educational conference with experts from all over the world Chris said. Thanks to the Guilds generosity I was able to bring back up-to-the-minute strategies and share them with the entire pharmacy team. Said Guild President Taryn Windheim Its important that associates have access to advanced training and by providing education funding the Guild helps keep Thompsons workforce among the best and the brightest Bob Locke far left and Taryn Windheim far right of the Thompson Health Guild are confident the Nurse Education Fund benefits associates like pharmacists Alexandra Fuller and Chris Dailey. The Thompson Health Guilds nearly 200 members dedicate countless hours of their time and talents to raise funds and provide support for Thompson Health. Over the last 25 years the Guild has donated more than 2.5 million through its various fundraisers. The Guild helps fund the purchase of new equipment throughout the health system supports expansion and renovation projects and sponsors programs benefitting patients and residents. In 1999 members established a Nurse Education Fund which has grown into a general education fund to benefit both clinical and non-clinical associates. While Thompson offers a generous tuition reimbursement benefit for associates enrolled in degree programs departments have a limited budget for conferences certificate programs and topic-specific training. We rely heavily on the Guilds funding to help when staff is pursuing that level of education said Jennifer DeVault vice president of Associate Services. Bob Locke Thompsons former director of Pharmacy and now a member of the Guilds Board of Directors took advantage of the Education Fund several times and says it paid huge dividends for his department when he shared his new-found knowledge with his co-workers and implemented new policies. The Guild Education Fund was a valuable resource for many years Bob said. I actually benefitted from it on a number occasions and in my opinion the benefit is maximized if the person receiving the education is required to share it with F. F. Jean Seager a volunteer at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center honors her mothers memory by helping others. In January 2009 Jean Seagers mother Flora Fisher was admitted to the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center ultimately spending more than three years as a resident. During this time I visited my mother several times a week and got to know many of the staff caregivers and residents said Jean who was born in the original F.F. Thompson Hospital on North Main Street. As time went on I knew I wanted to support the Thompson Health Foundation and the Continuing Care Center to thank everyone for the care my mother received. Every year in memory of her mother Jean makes a financial contribution to the Continuing Care Center. My mother passed her giving and caring spirit on to me so that I can share it with others she said. But simply writing a check isnt enough for Jean a graduate of Naples Central School and a Xerox retiree. In April of 2012 I signed up to volunteer at the Continuing Care Center specifically in recreation therapy she said. Since that time I have looked forward to volunteering and sometimes wonder who gets the most out of my efforts the residents or me It really gives me a good feeling to be able to provide the support that I do. Jean assists at ceramics class and runs a weekly Convenience Cart where residents gather in the lobby for some camaraderie and laughter as they buy snacks and sundries. And of course I cannot forget about my volunteering at the wonderful annual holiday dinners bazaars and other fun activities for the residents and their families said Jean. They are special times for everyone. And every day I volunteer is a special day for me. 12 LOYAL TO HIS ROOTS The late Eugene McKenney was a Depression-era orphan who overcame incredible odds to lead an extraordinary life. When he passed away on Feb. 15 2014 at the age of 86 he was a multi- millionaire but he never forgot the people or the institutions that helped him succeed in life. One of those institutions was F.F. Thompson Hospital where in the 1940s Gene found familial love and a level of success that would alter his Capra-esque life forever. Gene was born in 1927 and for reasons unknown given up to the care of Father Bakers Orphanage in Lackawanna NY. Gene was never adopted. When he turned 16 he was sent to the Newark State School a collection of brick buildings that housed among others those who were too old for orphanages but too young to be left alone in the world. At age 18 he made his way to Canandaigua and The Chosen Spot wrapped its arms around him. Gene landed his first job at Thompson as an orderly the lowest paying job in the facility and lived in a room located just above the hospitals laundry room. Although lacking a formal education he was a quick study with an uncanny ability to make friends. As a hard-working orderly he befriended Dr. Collins Connie Carpenter and Dr. Bill Weeden within two years working his way up from laundry duty to the operating room where he became a highly-valued surgical technician. And then he met Ed Hanley and his life took another incredible turn as did Eds. I was a patient when I met him said Ed now an attorney a Thompson benefactor and a former member of the Thompson Health Ethics Committee. I had surgery and he would stop by to see how I was doing. I introduced him to my parents and when they learned he had no family they took him into our home which was a real turning point in his life. He finally had the love of a family. I was an only child and Gene was like a brother to me Ed said. Best of all he introduced me to Ann Cleveland a student nurse at Thompson whom I married 60 years ago. Together we have six children who always considered Gene their uncle. After a few years with the Hanley family Gene was drafted into the Korean War served two years and then returned to Canandaigua. He obtained a job with Eastman Kodak Co. and transferred to the film giants offices in California where he worked as a Kodacolor technician. He never married. Ed says his lifelong friend was a shrewd investor and the Hanley family was not surprised to learn of his generous donation in support of Thompsons Sugical Care Center. Its typical of Gene to remember his years with Thompson Hospital and make such a generous gift said Ed. He never forgot his roots in Canandaigua. He visited often. He was very loyal to his friends and grateful for his life and he truly appreciated whatever assistance he was given along the way. F. F. Theyre also creative with their giving. The couple donated use of their timeshare property for the Thompson Galas silent auction and in December Kim put on a one-man performance of A Christmas Carol to raise money for Thompsons Breast Health Patient Navigation Program. Kim has been performing A Christmas Carol for the past six years in the Canandaigua area said Janet an ATHENA Award recipient and active Rotarian. After seeing Patrick Stewart perform it on Broadway in 1991 we bought the CD and made it a Thanksgiving tradition to listen to it on the way to visit family. Every time we listened to it Kim would say I could do that. So he finally spent six months memorizing it and began with a performance at Wood Library. Now six years later with a few props a costume and a supportive spouse he donates every performance to whichever charity is hosting him. Kim and Janet appreciate the importance of having quality health care close to home but their special connection to Thompson stems from a trip many years ago with Janets parents and family friend Dr. Nancy Brown Thompsons chief of anesthesiology. We were all in New York City for a play opening when my father had a health incident and ended up in a hospital Janet said. Thank goodness Nancy was with us. She acted as his advocate at the hospital and then drove my mom and dad home all the way back to Utica because my folks had taken the train and we had flown Thompson is full of great people like Nancy added Kim. Its reassuring to know that we have a quality health facility with such a highly- trained and dedicated staff so readily accessible. Barnhart Little Anne AED Training System will help associates save lives according to from left Julie Snyder Randy Farnsworth and Jennifer DeVault. A Partnership with Heart Part of Julie Snyders role as the American Heart Association Training Center coordinator at Thompson Health is to keep equipment up-to- date. With technological advances happening so quickly this can be a daunting and expensive mission. Thanks to local car dealer and staunch Thompson supporter Randy Farnsworth as well as the National Automobile Dealers Association NADA Julies job was made a little bit easier when a NADA grant provided the training center with a Little Anne AED Training System. Saving lives while spreading good will is what this program is all about and I was honored to help out said Randy. The training system includes a Little Anne mannequin and an AED trainer. It will see use in many of the training centers classes including Basic Life Support for Thompson Health associates and Advanced Cardiac Life Support for the hospital team that responds when a code is called. We train about 450 Thompson associates a year and several of our instructors train in the community as well so this will definitely help update our current lineup of AED training systems said Julie a licensed practical nurse who took over as training coordinator in January of 2014. I offer my deepest gratitude to Randy and the NADA for such a life-saving gift. Jennifer DeVault Thompson Health Vice President of Associate Services and Wellness offered her appreciation as well. Obtaining state-of-the-art equipment through grants is never an easy task and I commend Julie Randy and the National Automobile Dealers Association for their efforts she said. As Julie noted the American Heart Association trains hundreds of Thompson associates each year so this will pay big dividends down the road. F. F. Stoioff Storybook Farm Veterinary Hospital Creative Support Carole Lillis is a breast cancer survivor with a message for patients at Thompson Healths new Breast Imaging Center Youre in good hands. What I came to understand about Thompson is that its 100 percent all the way no matter what said Carole the director of Academic Success and an assistant professor of English at Keuka College who was diagnosed in 2010. You dont feel as though youre a number. You feel like you are in the best possible hands. They got me through the darkest period of my life. Carole was particularly impressed with the Breast Health Patient Navigation Team at Thompson. I had a lot of support wonderful family and good friends. But some patients have nobody. To have a Breast Health Navigator someone whos going to walk you through the process it just makes such a difference because youre anxious to begin with. Youre scared to death she said. Carole and her husband Rob have found some creative ways to support the navigation program. In December for example they hosted a fundraising reception at a performance of Kim Tenreiros one-man rendition of A Christmas Carol. Held at Finger Lakes Gallery Frame in downtown Canandaigua and featuring Dickensian delights the event brought several merchants together for the cause raising nearly 2000. Said Rob a psychologist who provides research and evaluation consulting to substance abuse and education programs through his company Evalumetrics Research We strive to be involved in events that benefit important organizations like Thompson Health by marshaling the resources of the generous local businesses and individuals in the community. And the timing of their fundraising reception couldnt have been better as it qualified for a dollar-for-dollar match though the Sands family Constellation Brands matching gift challenge increasing the value of their gift to nearly 4000. Carole and Rob Lillis hosted a fundraising reception in December. 20 2014 FRIENDS OF THOMPSON Other Programs And Funds continued Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Stoutenberg Mr. Michael Stuart Ms. Nancy Swain Mr. and Mrs. Robert Taylor Ms. M. None hit as close to home as the Pink Fly Golf Tournament which raises money for Thompson Healths Breast Health Patient Navigation Program. Nowadays we all know someone who has or who has had breast cancer and its always nice to know that your donation will be used so close to home said employee Nancy Booth who participated in the Pink Fly for the third straight year and spearheaded a Monroe Wheelchair effort to raise an additional 1000 for the cause. The company held Jeans Day every Friday with employees making a 5 donation for the privilege of wearing jeans that day. It was a fun way to raise money and a unique way of getting everyone involved Nancy said. Thompsons new Breast Imaging Center will feature a fully accredited Breast Health Patient Navigation Team with a dedicated full-time patient navigator serving as the hub for the patients continuum of care. The navigator will guide each patient through the healthcare system offering personalized managed care from the beginning of treatment to conclusion as well as immediate access to emotional financial and spiritual support. These patient-centered services will be available to all patients at no additional charge regardless of their insurance. As a health services company meeting the home medical equipment needs of people across New York State were extremely proud to support a worthwhile cause like Thompsons Breast Health Patient Navigation Program said Jen Westerdahl Loughner the companys director of public relations. Sadly breast cancer has claimed a few of our employees over the years so were honored to help this remarkable program in their memory. F. F. Messersmith finds a great deal of satisfaction in her volunteer role with Thompson Healths Transportation Department. My experience with Thompson Health is sheer enjoyment because of my interaction with patients and co-workers each day said Rita a retired teacher assistant who lives in Farmington with Jay her husband of 54 years. There is an aspect of the Thompson environment that always makes me feel welcome and happy. Its a feeling she first felt back in 1967 when her infant son needed emergency care. The immediate special comforting care given to my child was all I needed to convince me that this was a facility I would be loyal to from that time forward said Rita the mother of three adult children with three adult grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Today in her retirement she demonstrates this tremendous loyalty with her generous gift of time transporting inpatients outpatients and continuing care center residents to all areas of the hospital campus. My genuine interest is to be helpful to people of all ages and I have always been instinctively aware of people in need of understanding support and compassion Rita said noting that while she is volunteering she is able to enjoy a special group of peers who have a great sense of humor. Thompson Health is not just brick and mortar she added. It is caring people who offer comfort and support its a place where your needs are met and you can feel safe and secure. Im proud to be a part of it. Rita J. Honoring a Request Ann Louise Blazey lived a remarkable life and right up until the end she was doing what she always did thinking of others. My mothers life at Clark Meadows was very comfortable and secure and she enjoyed every part of it said her oldest son Mark noting that Ann developed many close friends among the residents and staff of the enriched living community operated by Thompson Health. One of her last requests just a few hours before she died was to make sure that each of the 75 staff members at Clark Meadows received a box of Christmas chocolates because she wanted to brighten their holidays. It was a request we were happy to honor Mark said of his mother who had lived at Clark Meadows since 2011 and enjoyed serving on the Resident Council. Ann was a talented woman with a passion for helping others. A loving wife mother of four boys Mark Scott Brian and Brent all born at Thompson grandmother great-grandmother and friend she was also a successful entrepreneur airplane pilot auto mechanic Sunday school teacher Cub Scout den mother ski instructor and PTA board member. Ann passed away on Sept. 27 2014 at the age of 86 but her memory lives on within Thompson Health. Undoubtedly Clark Meadows and Thompson Health extended her life Mark said enabling her to see three grandchildren married and one great-granddaughter born. Throughout her life but especially in her later years my mother received excellent care from the physicians nurses and other staff at Thompson Health added Mark who serves on Thompsons Quality and Safety Committee and co-authored a book on quality health care with former Thompson CEO Linda Farchione Hawks. Ann knew Thompson was raising funds to support a new Breast Imaging Center. She and her family wanted to lend their support. Mom was always there to help even in her later years said Mark. She was overjoyed she could help with the Breast Imaging Center. 28 2014 FRIENDS OF THOMPSON In Memory of continued Ms. Norma K. Gardner Ms. Deborah Garland Charles and Michele Gauss Ms. Patricia P. Schrader Joan and John Seehafer Remembering a Friend Ask Jeff Fox why he decided to spearhead the inaugural Cruisin for a Cause fundraiser in memory of his good friend Marty Pierson of Martys Chop Shop and youll get a heartfelt answer. The Sands Cancer Center gave me and my family more than hope said Jeff who enlisted fellow members of the Central New York Classic Cruisers to organize the fundraiser. Held in June at Torrey Ridge Winery it raised more than 1000 for the cancer center. Just about all of us have been touched by cancer in one way or another so the fundraiser was personal to all of us Jeff said. Marty was a very good friend and a big part of the hot rod and custom car world he was a visionary when it came to customizing cars and we wanted to keep his memory alive. And then theres Jeffs dad Clair Fox a South Bristol grape farmer who has survived three different forms of cancer. All three times the doctors were able to figure out just the right treatment to make the difference Jeff said. Were very lucky to have such skilled and dedicated doctors and nurses right here in our community. So when it came time to doing the cruise-in car show it was very personal for me in more ways than one. Clair now 76 continues to tend to his vineyard and spends each winter as a groomer at Bristol Mountain Winter Resort where he has worked for more than 40 years. To me the Sands Cancer Center means life said Clair whos also a member of the car club and helped out at the Cruisin for a Cause fundraiser. Its the place that gave me more time to enjoy life and to enjoy the things that a lot of people take for granted. The staff is top notch and very caring and Im grateful theyve given me a chance to enjoy each day as it comes be it a good day or a trying day Im happy to have it. Saying Thank You When Howard Judd received an appeal from Thompson Health asking for a donation to honor his physician on National Doctors Day the retired head bus driver at Livonia Central School showed his appreciation with a meaningful gift. Its a nice way to say thank you said Howard who at 74 says hes fit as a fiddle and sees his doctor Kipling Goh MD only once sometimes twice a year. Dr. Goh is more than a doctor. Hes extremely knowledgeable very personable and he takes a genuine interest in his patients lives. I consider him a good friend and Im honored to make a donation in his name. Dr. Goh appreciates the sentiment and the financial gesture. I am flattered and humbled that Mr. Judd made a donation in my name to an institution that I care deeply about said Dr. Goh a member of the Canandaigua Medical Group. Unselfish acts like this reinforce the reason why I enjoy the practice of medicine. Despite the many demands one can still make a difference help people and receive gratitude and recognition in return. To me that makes it all worthwhile. 32 2014 FRIENDS OF THOMPSON F. F.
