Integrated Complementary Medicine
Our Integrated Complementary Medicine Program provides a wide range of treatments and therapies designed to work in conjunction with conventional medicine. Mind/Body interventions such as guided imagery, relaxation and stress reduction, nutrition, herbal medicine, massage therapy, music therapy, acupuncture, aroma therapy and biofeedback are among the options that are available to patients and family members coping with cancer.
Massage Therapy - The National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health endorses the use of massage therapy for musculoskeletal pain in cancer patients during all phases of treatments. Massage therapy can be instrumental in encouraging circulation, reducing swelling, increasing the number of immune cells in the system, decreasing nausea and improving sleep. It also can be a relaxing experience during a particularly stressful time. Our staff of licensed massage therapists will deliver your treatment in a private comfortable setting.
Guided Imagery, Relaxation, and Stress Reduction - The Sands Cancer Center believes that caring for the person extends far beyond physical treatment. Spiritual and inspirational books, guided imagery tapes, as well as trained individuals, are available to you in your search for peace and meaning in life. The meditation room is an especially peaceful oasis for private contemplation, rejuvenation and relaxation.
Acupuncture - Used for centuries in China, acupuncture is a treatment involving the insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body. Acupuncture is suitable for treating a variety of pain, nervous system and muscular gastrointestinal disorders. By using acupuncture many people find that the pain and severity of cancer or treatment side effects are reduced. A licensed Acupuncturist is on staff at the Sands Cancer Center. You may wish to discuss this option with your heath care provider.
Nutrition - A nutritious diet is important during cancer treatment. People who eat well are able to fight infection more easily, are better able to cope with their side effects, and can rebuild healthy tissue faster. A Registered Dietitian is a part of the team at the Sands Cancer Center and offers nutritional guidance and counseling to help you feel your best.
