With the new year, a new program at the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center is off and running, thanks to funds raised with the help of the community.

Ticket sales for the prize drawing held at the Center’s recent Holiday Bazaar netted a record total of $7,550 in proceeds for Wish Upon a Star. The Holiday Bazaar, an annual event which takes place in November, has raised funds for Thompson Health for the past 19 years. Numerous vendors showed their support this year, selling hand-made quilts, jewelry and even chocolate. Local businesses, including Patient Portal, Lowe’s and Verizon, donated prizes for the drawing.

Coordinated in conjunction with a national nonprofit organization, Second Wind Dreams, Wish Upon a Star launched in October to enhance the lives of residents of the skilled-nursing facility by fulfilling wishes they express. For example, the first wishes filled included a Ukrainian buffet complete with Ukrainian dancers, a shopping spree and a quiet dinner with family.

More wishes are in the process of being fulfilled, including a wish involving a Star Trek-themed party and another that involves getting dressed up and attending a cultural event with family.

Individuals, organizations and local businesses that would be willing to donate their services, goods and/or airline miles to residents benefitting from Wish Upon a Star are asked to contact Lois Schenk at 585-396-6049. Financial contributions to the program are also welcome.
